What is Femap?

Femap is an advanced engineering simulation software program that creates finite element analysis models of complex engineering products and systems, and displays solution results. Femap can virtually model components, assemblies or systems and determine the behavioral response for a given operating environment.

CAD-Independent

Femap is CAD-independent and can access geometry data from all major CAD systems including CATIA, Pro/Engineer, NX, Solid Edge, SolidWorks and AutoCAD. Once imported you can prepare the model for analysis using the geometry locator to identify and display potentially troublesome entities, such as slivers, and either remove them completely with the geometry cleanup tools or suppress them. Femap also offers a wealth of geometry creation and modification functions so you can make necessary model changes in preparation for finite element model creation.

Finite Element Modeling

The full finite element model with underlying data is fully exposed by Femap, allowing you to view, create or modify entities directly. Femap’s grouping, layering and visualization tools help you to manage model display while creating and setting up the finite element model.

Femap with NX Nastran

Femap provides comprehensive functionality in an independent environment for modeling, simulation and review of product performance results.

Integration with NX Nastran

Femap has a 15 year history of working as a pre- and post processor to Nastran. In addition to NX Nastran, Femap is also able to support other versions of Nastran including MSC/MD Nastran and NEiNastran. All of these solvers can be easily encapsulated within Femap while providing a high degree of solution control to the user.

Detailed and complete NX Nastran controls

Within Femap it is possible to directly define & control most aspects of the NX Nastran simulation. From controlling the solution options (such as defining an iterative solution), param keyword settings, specific job controls (such as restart controls, executive controls & manual controls with DMAP), case controls (load and constraint definition), model checking (geomcheck controls, weight & ground checks), and detailed result generation requests.

Femap Thermal Solver

The Femap Thermal Solver adds state-of-the-art thermal analysis solutions to the Femap environment and provides fast and accurate solutions to complex thermal engineering problems. Using finite-element mesh, finite-volume based numerical techniques, the Femap Thermal Solver makes it easy to model nonlinear and transient heat transfer processes including conduction, radiation as well as phase change. Leading-edge solver technology provides solid reliability and superior solution speed for even the most challenging problems. With Femap, accurate thermal analysis can be performed quickly and effectively, delivering the engineering insight and turnaround speed needed to ensure success within today’s rapid development cycles.

Femap Advanced Nonlinear Solver

The NX Nastran Advanced Nonlinear software solution enables you to analyze models with nonlinearity from contacting parts, material nonlinearities and/or geometric nonlinearities (that is, large deformations).An add-on module of NX Nastran – Basic, the Advanced Nonlinear solver is an integration of the well-known and highly regarded ADINA solver into NX Nastran as Solution 601 for implicit solutions or Solution 701 for explicit solutions. The integration of the ADINA solver into Solution 601/701 is transparent to the user because the input and output formats are based on NX Nastran formats. Thus, to the user, the experience and usage of Solution 601/701 is completely Nastran-centric.

Femap Flow Solver

The Femap Flow Solver adds state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis solutions to the Femap environment and provides fast, efficient and accurate solutions to complex CFD problems. A sophisticated algebraic multi-grid solver provides the backbone to a complete CFD capability that is able to support the simulation of both laminar and turbulent fluid flow, low speed and high speed compressible flow, forced flow, natural convection and mixed flows, all with multiple inlets, outlets and internal flow boundary conditions. This memory efficient capability ensures that solutions are solved quickly and easily. Additional flexibility is ensured by the support of both unstructured and structured meshing. The Femap Flow Solver provides an excellent complement to the Femap Thermal Solvers by providing the ability to couple the Femap Flow Solver together with the Femap Thermal Solver.

Interactively supports a broad range of capabilities

The range of capabilities in the base module includes linear and statics, normal modes, buckling, basic nonlinear and heat transfer. In addition NX Nastran for Femap includes additional options for dynamics – that includes transient/dynamic, frequency/harmonic response, response spectrum, random response DDAM (Dynamic Design Analysis Method) – as well as advanced nonlinear analysis, aeroelasticity, super-elements, optimization, rotor dynamics and DMAP (Direct Matrix Abstraction Program).

The product configuration provides a wealth of functionality in the base module as well as allowing for great flexibility and scalability extending to the most advanced types of analysis that are able to handle the toughest engineering problems.

The latest release

The latest release of Femap, version 11.2, provides extensions to the post-processing capabilities of Femap including analysis studies and free body section cuts; new geometry modification tools that allow faster direct interactive geometry editing; extended preprocessing functionality including a contact manager data surface that greatly facilitates contact model setup and visualization; meshing enhancements that include improved control of through-thickness elements and mesh splitting for increased meshing versatility; performance improvements and many more miscellaneous and solver specific enhancements.
