Solid Edge Subscriptions and Online Store

Solid Edge Flexible Licensing is now available in Australia.

Solid Edge users can now license Solid Edge in the traditional manner with a Perpetual License and optional Maintenance & Support or on a Rental or Subscription basis.

Companies can now choose the Solid Edge licensing option that best aligns to their projects and budgets. This will make it easier for Solid Edge customers to increase productivity, get to market faster and lower their total cost of ownership.

There are four packages levels available with Solid Edge and each package can be licensed on a Perpetual or Subscription/Rental basis.

Solid Edge Rendering

The KeyShot solution is a real-time ray-tracing and global illumination program used to create 3D renderings, animations and interactive visuals.

It has an incredibly simple user interface with drag-n-drop material and environment pre-sets and the ability to turn any object into a point light, area light or IES light profile.

Luxion develops their own CPU-based rendering technology, so no special graphics cards are needed and they are not dependent on outside development for support or driver updates. by using 3D rendering you accelerate your design.

Solid Edge Classic or Premium has KeyShot integrated within, allowing you to send the 3D data directly to KeyShot for rendering. Of course, using KeyShot’s LiveLinking technology it maintains that link, so updates can be propagated as designs evolve.

KeyShot gives you real-time rendering (at 2.1 megapixel resolution – equivalent to 1920 x 1080) and offline, fully calculated rendering to any resolution you want.
It will maintain any material assignments from Solid Edge. It can also be used to render out frames defined in Solid Edge’s native animation tools.

Solid Edge Simulation software is an easyto-use, built-in finite element analysis tool that enables design engineers to digitally validate part and assembly designs within the Solid Edge environment.

Based on proven Femap™ finite element modeling technology, Solid Edge Simulation significantly reduces the need for physical prototypes, thereby reducing material and testing costs, while saving design time.

For Use By Design Engineers

This optional, built-in Solid Edge application uses the same underlying geometry and user interface as all Solid Edge applications. Solid Edge Simulation is easy enough for any Solid Edge user who has a fundamental understanding of FEA principles, yet robust enough to service most of your analysis needs.

By enabling engineers to perform their own simulation, more analysis gets done in less time – improving quality, reducing material costs and minimizing the need for physical prototypes – without incurring the high costs of outsourced analysis.

The layout of the user interface is designed to guide the user through the whole analysis process, with on-hand help if required, which makes it easy to learn initially, and revisit if necessary.

This release of Solid Edge has been certified to run on the following:

  • Windows 7 Enterprise, Ultimate, or Professional (64-bit only) with Service Pack 1.
  • Windows 8 or 8.1 Pro or Enterprise (64-bit only). Windows 8 (home) and Windows RT are not supported.
  • Internet Explorer 10 or 11 (IE 8 meets minimum requirements).

NOTE: Solid Edge ST8 is 64-bit only. Solid Edge ST6 was the last release of 32-bit Solid Edge.

Solid Edge stops certifying new releases against an operating system shortly after Microsoft drops mainstream support for it. Solid Edge ST8 will not install on Windows Vista or Windows XP. Microsoft dropped mainstream support for Windows 7 in January 2015; however Solid Edge ST8 continues to support Windows 7.

NOTE: Solid Edge ST9 will be the last Solid Edge release to support Windows 7.

Windows 10 is scheduled to release in late 2015 after Solid Edge ST8 is released. We will test ST8 on Windows 10 and plan to announce support of Windows 10 with Internet Explorer 11 in ST9 and in an ST8 Maintenance Pack after testing is completed and any critical issues are resolved. Solid Edge will not support the new Windows 10 browser, Microsoft Edge (codenamed Spartan).

Hardware System Requirements

This release of Solid Edge has been certified to run on the following:

Recommended system configuration:

  • 64-bit Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 operating system.
  • 8 GB RAM or more
  • True Color (32-bit) or 16 million colors (24-bit).
  • True Color (32-bit) or 16 million colors (24-bit).

Minimum system configuration:

  • Any of the above 64-bit operating systems .
  • 2 GB RAM or more.
  • 65K colors.
  • Screen Resolution: 1280 x 1024 or higher.
  • 4.9 GB of disk space is required to install Solid Edge.
It is not recommended that you run Solid Edge on Server operating systems. Solid Edge is not supported on Intel Itanium processors. It is not recommended that you run Solid Edge on Server operating systems. Solid Edge is not supported on Intel Itanium processors.

Internet Explorer is not required to be the default browser.

Some Solid Edge commands require Microsoft Excel. Solid Edge stops testing with Microsoft products shortly after Microsoft drops mainstream support for them. Microsoft dropped mainstream support for Office 2007 in October 2012. On ST8, we recommend Microsoft Office Professional 2010 or 2013.

Display System Requirements and Information

Solid Edge runs on graphics drivers that support Windows 7 or Windows 8. Contact your graphics driver manufacturer to determine whether their graphics adapter/driver supports these operating systems.

For optimal performance, it is recommended to use a professional graphics card that is designed for CAD applications. For information about cards used in testing Solid Edge and results, refer to graphics certification table.

At least a 256MB graphic card is recommended when working with large assemblies or complex parts.

Note that running with extremely high screen resolution and color depth increases the memory requirements on the system and may result in apparent performance degradation. If experienced, reconfigure the display system to the recommended resolution and color depth for improved performance.

When running Solid Edge, if you experience an abnormally high abort rate, parts disappearing, or other graphic anomalies you may not be using the appropriate graphics driver. For more details, refer to graphics certification table.

Also setting Display Fonts to Large Fonts or Extra Large Fonts (larger than 96 DPI) may cause some Solid Edge user interface items to not display as intended. Recommendation to resolve these would be to use Normal Fonts (96 DPI).

A wide-screen ribbon layout has been added for Solid Edge. This new ribbon layout is optimal for horizontal screen resolutions set to 1920 or above. Solid Edge automatically detects your resolution and sets the ribbon layout to wide-screen starting at horizontal resolutions 1600 and above. You will see some group collapsing on the right side of the Ribbon on resolutions between 1600 and 1920.

Independent Review: Generative Design & the Future of CAD

Siemens PLM has announced the impending arrival of Solid Edge ST10 and with it, a host of new tools that will make design, simulation and manufacturing easier to manage. Early this year, the Solid Edge team released a sneak peek of its product. However, details of the most dramatic improvements were held back at that time. The announcement now sheds light on the many new features and capabilities users have been looking forward to.

Over the past five years, generative design has been one of the hottest topics driving CAD. Generative design allows engineers to specify an overall box volume a part must fit in, the forces the part will be subject to — as well as add specific parameters such as materials, manufacturing and cost limitations. The software will take all this into consideration to try to determine the optimum part. One type of generative design is topology optimization, which is the iterative process of reworking and optimizing a model in a way that can reduce the volume of the part, therefore its weight and cost. To build these optimized parts, powerful simulation algorithms are employed to add material where a part needs to be stronger and remove it where it is not necessary.
Although many of the shapes that are created by generative design tools can be difficult to manufacture with anything but 3D printing, the visualization of these optimized products can be very useful in making design decisions that would have been impossible in the past..
